Medical Imaging Magazine recently listed the top 20 medical imaging companies, as
judged by an independent panel of industry experts. Judging criteria centered on
categories customers consider vital to make educated equipment purchasing decisions.
The Results
- Imation ranked #12 overall in the Top 20 listing, which included companies ranging
from modality manufacturers to film vendors.
- Among the primarily laser imager/medical imaging film companies, however, Imation
ranked #1, outshining such companies as Kodak, Fuji, Agfa, Sterling, Polaroid and
Konica.
- Kodak (#21), Konica (#24), Sterling (#28) and Polaroid (#34) didn't make the
Top 20 list.
Criteria for Top 20 Ranking
Companies were graded on the following criteria:
- Quality of products debuted since November 1995
- Price performance of products
- Upgradeability of technology
- Product/technology positioning for the future
- Business management of P&L, acquisitions, mergers and divestitures
- Ability to capitalize on new and niche markets
- Internal company leadership
- Product service and support

The Judges
The judging panel was comprised of 14 experienced multi-modality end-users
and imaging industry experts. Each judge is involved with medical imaging equipment
recommendations and familiar with the categories that imaging professionals indicate are
important to keep in stride with, or ahead of, managed care. The panelists included:
- Christine Hughes, Principal, Hadley Hart Group--experience includes
developing medical imaging centers and hospital departments.
- Jon Brubaker, MDB Information Network--an analyst who monitors the
cardiology and general ultrasound markets.
- Loretta Loncoske, MDB Information Network--an analyst who specializes
in CT, MRI, specialized CR and general radiology markets.
- Shannon Clemens, Senior Product Manager, Contract Services, VHA Inc.-
-responsibility for VHA's medical imaging film contracts.
- John Cumming, CEO, WDI Capital Markets, Inc.--an international
advisory and investment banking firm specializing in healthcare.
- Phil Drew, Ph.D., President, Concord Consulting Group--which provides
data and analyses to medical imaging equipment users and manufacturers.
- Cherrill Farnesworth, CEO, Chairman and President of TME Inc. and
HealthHelp Networks Inc.--leader of radiology resource development and
radiology management services for managed care and self-insured
employers.
- Joel Gray, Ph.D., Consultant, Mayo Clinic--medical physicist in the
Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.
- Wayne Hibbs--independent healthcare consultant with experiences in
biomedical engineering, cardiovascular diagnostics and surgery.
- Suzanna Hoppszallern, Director of Health Technology Assessment,
American Hospital Assn.--evaluates the latest developments and trends in
health care technology, medical practice and clinical services.
- Douglas Orr, President, J&M Group--a health care and medical technology
consulting company that evaluates merging and high-growth market
segments, especially in medical imaging, cardiology and high-technology
medical devices.
- D. Skip Sallee, M.D., Chairman and CEO of Team Health Radiology
Services, and a former radiologist at the Miami Vascular Institute.
- Ronald B. Schilling, Independent Consultant and Lecturer, Strategic
Thinking, Stanford University--focuses on cost-effective health care.
- John Severson, President of Radiology Business Management Assn., and
Administrator for Radiology Associates, where he helps prepare marketing
and strategic planning of new radiology ventures.
